Daptone at Vienna Jazz Festival

News:

Their albums recall an analog era led by iconic studios like those at Motown and Stax Records. DAPTONE RECORDS the little indie label founded by Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman in Brooklyn, NY, stands for the the tastiest, most delectable nuggets of Soul, Funk, Gospel and Afrobeat to be found today.

Their distinctive sound is a product of the studio acoustics, recording only on analog tape, which creates the raw and distinctive sound of the label. In summer the two most popular groups of the label Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings perform at the Vienna Jazz Festival 2012.

Daptone Records – Behind The Scenes

Charles Bradley
His late debut is one of the most beautiful fairy tale of soul music history in the recent years. The 62-year-old soul singer Charles Bradley is no stranger to hard times. For decades, he trampend across the USA, was temporarily homeless, worked as a chef in psychiatric and social projects. Meanwhile, he always tried to pursue his dream.

At 14, he saw James Brown live at the Apollo Theater. From that moment on he knew what he wanted to do. It took him a long time but in 2010 he finally was discovered by Gabriel Roth from Daptone Records. Roth brought him together with the long-haired, white-Funk guitarist Thomas Brenneck. The two recorded together those 12 spectacular songs that make up the hit album “No Time for Dreaming”. The retrospective and socially critical album immediately became a hit in the worldwide soul community and celebrated a big success.

Together with The Menahan Street Band he was touring all around the world from Japan to Europe where he also played at the Vienna Jazz Festival. On 25th June 2012 he returns to the Vienna Jazz festival again playing at the WUK.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have come a long way since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago. Steeped in the gilded and gritty sounds of gospel, soul, and funk, this nine-piece  group electrifies fans, disc jockeys, critics, record collectors, and bloggers the world over with their heart-felt sound.

The story of Sharon Jones reminds to the one of  Charles Bradley.  Being refused by many labels for being too old or too ugly she worked as a “Correction’s Officer” in the notorious prison on Rykers Island. Then shooting for funk legend Lee Fields, she was discovered. The Californian Greyboy booked her and with the Dap Kings she found an intimate musical relationship.

Their devotion to soul music is clearly demonstrated on the band’s four critically acclaimed albums Dap Dippin (2002), Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007), and I Learned the Hard Way, all captured and released by Daptone Records. Not enought, in 2011 the group released „Soul Time!“ a compilation of unreleased tracks.

On 9th July 2012 Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings guest in Vienna performing in a nice ambience at the Arkadenhof of Vienna’s Townhall.

Spotlight on Sharon Jones

This is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest and its a welcomed breath of fresh air in Vienna.  But, most of all, Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are a celebration of, and a testament to, the possibilities of modern day soul music.
